As part of our story-telling curriculum, the teachers use a story as the starting point for each new topic. These are set out on our Story/Poetry Matrix (see below).
The children in the younger classes may learn the new story by heart and are encouraged to perform it, first in the classroom and then later to their families at home. The older classes have a longer text, chosen for its rich possibilities and use this as a stimulus for English activities.
In this way they build up a fund of stories over the years, that they can draw on for inspiration and ideas in other areas of their learning.
Learning and retelling the stories is also a very effective way of building children’s skills and confidence, especially for those who find listening and speaking more of a challenge.
